Cendrine Marrouat is a French-born social media journalist, blogger, coach, curator, and author living in Canada. What inspired you to enter your profession?
A My desire to help others.
My first steps in the social media world were pretty much the same as many people even today. I had no idea who my audience was and how to reach them successfully. So instead of waiting for an answer to come to me, I decided to go after it. After weeks of research, reading, and webinars, I decided to experiment with ideas and share the lessons learnt on an old blog of mine.
After a while, people started asking me to help them with their online presence. Now, five years later, I do it full-time.
It may sound cliché, but knowing that I can help somebody find their way and get the attention they deserve is something that gives me a lot of pride and joy.
What apps/software/tools can’t you live without?
What’s your best time-saving shortcut productivity tip?
A Do not try to do too much at once. Settle for small goals, but do an excellent job with each.
What everyday thing do you think are you better at than anybody else?
A English is not my mother tongue but I studied its intricacies for six years at university. Linguistics and phonetics were two of my favorite subjects. So, over the years, I have learnt to read between the lines. This has proven very helpful in my dealings with people and ideas. I have a very analytical mind and read others quite well.
What are you currently reading?
A I haven’t opened a book in almost a year. With that said, as a curator, I read a lot of articles.
The post that has really impressed me lately is the one written by Ryan Hanley. “Are Brands Measuring the Wrong Type of Engagement? A Red Bull Case Study” sums up exactly what is missing in a lot of brands’ social media strategies.
Actually, it is a topic I discuss at length in my new release – The Little Big eBook on Social Media Audiences: Build Yours, Keep It, and Win.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
A “Say less and show more.” It was one of the first I received and it has worked with everything.
What’s your greatest challenge?
A Getting lumped together with the self-proclaimed social media gurus / experts / ninjas of this world.
The professionals who have a deep knowledge of one or two platforms exist and deserve the recognition. However, when it comes to social media in general, no one has the ability to master everything. There are too many tools and services out there. And dozens of new ones pop up every month. I know because it is one of the topics I cover for my blog.
I feel that the problem of self-proclaimed “guruism” can only be solved if social media professionals continue speaking against it and brands choose to avoid shortcuts.
What’s your greatest achievement?
A Having made it this far without the help of any renowned influencer in my field. I owe my success to two things: my hard work and a group of staunch supporters. It says a lot about the power of word of mouth, doesn’t it?
Anything else you want to add?
A Thank you for this wonderful opportunity!
Who would you like to see answer these same questions?
A I’d love to see John Thomas answer these questions. He is a fantastic content curator and loves talking about technology. And he has built a very solid community on Facebook.
